Instagram is introducing a new AI-based system that will be able to identify teens who are trying to hide their real age. The algorithm will analyze photos, subscriptions, and friends’ posts to determine the user’s real age.
According to Bloomberg, this decision stems from parental and legislative pressure. People are concerned about the platform’s impact on teens’ mental health. With a new AI tool called Adult Classifier, Meta will automatically move users under 18 into accounts with stricter privacy settings, regardless of what data they provided when signing up.
Meta had previously started transferring users to teen accounts based on their stated age. However, the new algorithm, which will be launched early next year, is designed to identify those trying to circumvent the rules. Users aged 16 and 17 will be able to change privacy settings on their own, while teens under 16 will need parental consent to disable various restrictions.
