YouTube may launch infinite scrolling with autoplay for long videos, like Shorts. The idea is that swiping up will start playing the next video. The experiment with the new feature was launched in August for some Android users.
It is not yet a fact that the feature will be implemented everywhere, The Verge notes. However, the very appearance of such an idea signals possible changes on the platform.
The introduction of an endless feed like on TikTok could radically change the approach to watching videos on YouTube. Currently, users select videos based on thumbnails and titles, often guided by recommendations or their subscriptions. On TikTok, content is played automatically, and users just need to scroll through the feed. This format is considered more effective, as it minimizes the viewer’s efforts and allows the algorithm to quickly adapt to their preferences.
In addition, the transition to an infinite feed could free creators from having to pay much attention to thumbnails and video titles.
However, this innovation also has a downside. An infinite feed assumes that the main role in choosing content for the user will be played by an algorithm, and not the viewer or creator themselves.
