Back in October, YouTube announced an increase in Shorts’ timing to 3 minutes. The feature was initially tested on a group of users and caused mixed feelings. Since it was stated that all videos under 3 minutes would become Shorts, creators had fears for old content.
Many mistakenly thought that old short videos would also go into the Shorts feed, which would ruin the stats. However, the YouTube team was quick to dispel this myth. Only fresh short videos will go to the YouTube Shorts feed.
After a few rounds of finalizing the update, the new feature was announced in the X account of a YouTube Liaison representative :
“Creators! We’ve entered Phase 4! You can now use the Shorts creation tools to make up to 3-minute Shorts!
Now creators should keep in mind that all new videos under 3 minutes will go straight to the YouTube Shorts feed. Is that good or bad? In our opinion, with the current rise in popularity of YouTube Shorts, this update will be a cool opportunity to attract a new audience. At the very least, the fact that Shorts reportedly get over 70 billion views should motivate you. Therefore, we advise you to try to adapt your content to the vertical format.
