Best Equipment for YouTubers: Where To Start?

If you’ve decided to start a career on YouTube, you’ve probably already read a bunch of articles about what you need to do. This is especially true when it comes to equipment, which is getting increasingly more numerous every year, and it’s easy to get lost in the mix. So in this article we have compiled a kind of memo or checklist on all the important points of the initial stage. What’s best to record on, to mic up, and to light up – we covered all of this briefly but thoroughly.

1. The camera — the backbone

Sure, you can certainly post videos on YouTube that aren’t filmed on camera (like, audio podcasts or animation). However, this is not the dominant content on the platform, so keep in mind that the right camera choice is the key to success. Take into account not only the image quality, but also the user-friendliness, features and capabilities of the device.

  1. DSLR cameras. DSLRs provide excellent image quality, especially when shooting in low light conditions. They also allow you to change lenses, providing flexibility for different shooting environments. Popular models: Canon EOS Rebel T7i, Nikon D5600.
  2. Mirrorless cameras. They are lighter and smaller, but offer the same high quality shooting as DSLRs. Mirrorless cameras are great for those who frequently travel or shoot on the move. A good choice is the Sony Alpha a6400, with its fast autofocus speed and 4K shooting.
  3. Point-and-shoot cameras. Perfect for beginners and creators who value portability. Examples: Canon G7X Mark III, Sony ZV-1. These cameras are easy to use but still provide high image quality and convenience when shooting on the go.

Don’t forget about using external lenses as well. They can greatly improve the quality of your footage. For example, fixed focal length lenses (prime lenses) often produce sharper images and better quality in low light conditions.

2. Microphone. I can hear you!

If you are making some extremely unusual audio content, the main task of which is to impress the user with its originality, you are free to choose any microphone that suits your purposes. Otherwise, pick the best of what’s available to you, or they just won’t listen to you (or hear you).

  1. Condenser microphones. Perfect for recording sound in a studio. They are highly sensitive and transmit sound with minimal distortion. Example: Audio-Technica AT2020, it’s great for reviews and podcasts.
  2. Clip-on microphones. Suitable for vlogs and interviews, it’s small and easy to use for shooting outdoors or on the move. Examples: Rode SmartLav+, BOYA BY-M1. These microphones provide good sound even in noisy environments.
  3. On-camera microphones. A good choice for filming on the go. For example, Rode VideoMic Pro, which easily attaches to the camera and provides directional sound while minimizing background noise.

Also, don’t forget a wind shield (deadcat) if you shoot outdoors a lot.

3. Lighting. Don’t be afraid to be bright!

Good lighting is certainly half of a good picture, because even the best camera can’t make up for a lack of light.

  • Softboxes. These devices create soft, consistent light that removes harsh shadows and makes the picture look more professional. Examples: Neewer Softbox Kit.
  • Ring lamps. Great for portrait shooting and recording reviews. For example, Neewer Ring Light. Ring lamps create even lighting that emphasizes the face and makes it more expressive.
  • LED panels. Small and portable. Examples: Aputure AL-M9, Lume Cube. These panels can be used in a variety of environments, from studio to outdoor shooting, due to their portability and adjustable brightness.

4. Must have equipment for beginners. What else you might need?

Aside from the basic equipment, there are some useful gear gadgets that will make your life easier and improve the quality of your content.

  1. Tripods. They provide picture stabilization and allow you to shoot from different angles. Consider Joby GorillaPod, Manfrotto Compact Action. Tripods with flexible legs, like the GorillaPod, allow you to mount your camera on almost any surface.
  2. Memory cards. A fast and reliable memory card is a must for smooth video recording. SanDisk Extreme Pro, Lexar Professional 1000x – try starting with these.
  3. Portable stabilizers. They can prevent camera shake, which is especially important when shooting on the move. Examples: DJI Osmo Mobile, Zhiyun Smooth 4.
  4. Lighting stands and fixtures. Ensuring proper placement of light sources is essential. Stands and mounts help you fine-tune your lighting to achieve the best results.
  5. Green screen. If you plan to use a chroma key, green screen is an essential tool for creating professional backdrops. This is particularly useful for people who work with visual effects and for streamers.

Conclusion

Choosing the best equipment for YouTubers depends on your goals, budget, and experience. Just remember that even with minimal investment, you can create quality content if you choose the right tools. Don’t be afraid to experiment and improve your skills! Having good equipment will help you stand out among your competitors and attract more viewers to your channel.

Good luck!
