Customised Thumbnail for YouTube Shorts: Old Myth or New Reality?

There’s been a lot of discussion online for a while now, “Will it be possible to add thumbnails to YouTube Shorts?” At first, the answer was pretty unambiguous and sad. Now we rush to you with good news: there are advances in this issue. Without further ado, read the news below.

Quick reference: what is a video thumbnail?

It is a thumbnail image that allows you to display the essence of the clip. Moreover, a good thumbnail can attract more viewers (even if the video is not as good as the thumbnail).

Very often creators use the image of people on the thumbnail. In general, it is proven that it is the person who attracts the viewer to “click” on the video icon. That’s why large channels are using this lifehack quite successfully. Here’s a cool example in action:

When can we expect YouTube Short Thumbnails?

Unfortunately, we have to make you a little sad: it’s not going to happen as quickly as we expected. The YouTube team is already in the process of conceptualizing the thumbnails for Shorts. In the meantime, there’s one “but”…..

While the importance and success of video thumbnails is obvious to everyone, the YouTube team doesn’t think thumbnails for Shorts in our usual sense are necessary. On the one hand, they’re right: most people watch Shorts from the feed where the thumbnails aren’t displayed at all. On the other hand, the lack of quality thumbnails spoils the appearance of the Shorts tab on each creator’s feed. Either way, it affects the perception of a YouTuber’s personal brand.

So what now?

Don’t get upset yet. YouTube is developing an alternative solution to every creator’s problem. There’s a good chance that we’ll be able to choose thumbnails for Shorts from frames from the video. What’s more, they say that right in the app it will be possible to add text and filters to the thumbnail to engage new viewers.

We’ll continue to follow the updates, but in the meantime, read all the news from the “Blog” section to stay up to date with all the news.
