At one time, YouTube made one of its most successful decisions and began to give creators a Play Button for various achievements. Silver — for 100 thousand subscribers, gold for 1 million, and so on. This made the platform more tangible than something purely virtual, creators began to receive a kind of “quality marks” and experience absolutely incredible feelings. And damn, this is really motivating!
We recently saw one of these good old golden Play Buttons in the hands of Cristiano Ronaldo, who set (another) record for gaining subscribers in a day.
But here’s the thing. PLAY BUTTON WILL NEVER BE THE SAME!!!
Yep. YouTube very quietly, without causing unnecessary noise, announced that it has changed the size of the coveted signs — they will become about 30% smaller. Here is what the statement says:
“More creators than ever before are achieving impressive milestones on YouTube and seeing their passion pay off with Creator Awards. Starting in August 2024, we’re introducing a new, lighter-sized award. Don’t worry, the quality and design is staying the same, along with the prestige and recognition that you deserve.”
Creators have already suggested that this is due to the growing number of creators who achieve the necessary milestones thanks to YouTube Shorts, so the platform has to produce many more Play Buttons than before. Considering how much the platform earns every year from its own creators, this decision looks a little strange, although quite justified (let’s think about the environment!).
Well, at least now the creators who have already received their original BIG buttons will probably value them even more.
